12 Practices to Improve Your Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is an understated part of emotional well-being. It provides religious people with a connection to a higher being or set of values that influence their lives. It also brings them closer to their loved ones and community who share the same ideology.

Spiritual wellness is also applicable to non-religious people. This facet of life is responsible for personal drive and purpose. A lack of spirituality can often cause emotional turmoil and disdain for life. Thus, preserving it is important, especially in the face of adversity.

1. Meditate in the Mornings

Spiritual wellness is helpful when something is troubling you. Mindfulness practices like meditation can provide so much clarity. Stay still and be quiet as you explore your thoughts. You can take as little or as much time as you need to let your brain calm down and recenter itself.

Meditation doesn’t have to be stationary, though. For instance, you can go on a walk while you contemplate your thoughts. Being in different natural surroundings is also relaxing, improving the experience further.

2. Practice Yoga

Yoga is another mindfulness practice that hones your spirituality. Western societies emphasize physical intentions over spiritual motives in these moves. However, this practice actually has very strong ties to your inner self.

Yoga is associated with resilience and happiness. The practice is also quite philosophical. Focusing on the need for spiritual knowledge and self-awareness transcends mental tethers and helps you complete the poses.

3. Go to Places of Worship

You may need a change of scenery to improve your spiritual wellness. There are various places of worship for believers to visit. You can attend services or go on quieter days to have alone time.

Fewer people are coming to these spaces. From 2020 to 2023, only about 30% of U.S. adults have gone to church, synagogue, mosque or temple in the past seven days. However, this means you can find peace and quiet to contemplate your spiritual journey.

4. Create a Journal

Spiritual growth can provide so many lessons that it’s hard to track them all. Before you forget all the profound realizations, write them down in a journal. Add different reflections to document your thought process.

Revisit the journal if you ever hit a snag in your spiritual journey. For example, say you’re recovering from grief. On days when the feelings seem more prominent, read entries where you might have come to peace with your situation.

5. Listen to Music

Music can greatly impact your mood, which trickles down to your overall spiritual health. Playing upbeat tunes can make you feel happier when you’re feeling down. Peaceful instrumentals can also be soothing to listen to.

Music is also a significant element in religions like Christianity. Singing harmoniously to meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies is fulfilling. It creates a strong sense of community and collective spirituality.

6. Connect With Others

The spiritual journey focuses on individual growth. However, having people you can lean on when facing certain dilemmas is nourishing. Loneliness can bring so much sadness. It can even lead to further anxiety around human interaction and increase solitude.

Invite your family over for a meal. Call a friend to grab a drink and catch up. Foster your old connections to avoid such emptiness. You can also connect with new people and create meaningful relationships.

7. Volunteer in Communities

Volunteering can bring a refreshing change of pace. You get to connect with your community and help others. It also improves self-confidence since you can impact and bring attention to important issues.

Volunteering is also quite eye-opening since you can get involved in issues that matter to you. You may have a strong sense of justice or environmental responsibility. Spiritual wellness helps you tune in to your purpose in life

8. Take Social Media Breaks

Social media is a great way to connect with loved ones. However, using it every day can also be quite unhealthy. Some people develop a fear of missing out when they see all the events people are having or attending.

It is possible to celebrate milestones on those apps. However, about 62% of Facebook and X users feel their achievements are less valuable than those of friends or influencers. Put down your phone and take a break.

9. Find New Hobbies

Some people think hobbies distract from spiritual growth. However, they can be quite helpful for relieving stress and recentering yourself. Find a relaxing activity you enjoy.

For example, some people love painting. Creating visual art that reflects what’s on your mind can feel liberating. Others prefer more active pursuits, like gardening or sports. Moving your body can clear the mind, letting you focus more on mindfulness and spirituality.

10. Rest Your Body

Spiritual wellness requires physical wellness. If the body is tired, the spirit won’t be in good shape. Insomnia is associated with low spirituality and depression. Improve your sleeping arrangements and get more rest.

A well-balanced diet can also give your body all the nutrients it needs to function properly. Combine proteins, fruits and vegetables in as many meals as possible. Remember to hydrate to keep your water levels up.

11. Keep Your Home Clean

Clean your home to improve your spiritual wellness. A messy environment can cause so much stress and distract you from concentrating. Tidy up as often as possible and deep clean regularly to remove dust from the nooks and crannies.

Consider having a decluttering session as well. Fewer possessions mean fewer things to organize in your home. You can give things to a loved one or donate them to a stranger. This act of kindness can bring good karma in the future.

12. Get Spiritual Tokens

Tokens can improve overall wellness. For instance, turquoise crystals enhance your spiritual groundedness and provide good luck. Amethyst attracts sincerity and spiritual wisdom.

You don’t have to limit yourself to crystals, though. There are other spiritual tokens, such as jewelry or symbolic pieces. Find something you connect with and keep it with you at all times.

Achieve Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is integral to a high quality of life. Try these practices to improve this facet of your well-being. A strong spiritual core can let you accomplish anything you set your mind to.
