SwellWomen History

SwellWomen was birthed in the summer of 2003 as a sister company to Maui Surfer Girls, the internationally recognized surf camp for girls ages 12-17. The legendary Dustin Tester, who was born and raised on the island of Maui, founded Maui Surfer Girls and helped it gain national prestige in the media.

Thanks to exposure in Time magazine, Seventeen and Teen People, Maui Surfer Girls became popular not only with teens, but was soon flooded with inquires from women older than 17 who wanted the same type of surf camp experience.

Enter Me-Shell Barnas, Dustin's assistant director and right-hand woman at the time. Me-Shell, who in her own right is a world-class athlete and entrepreneur, seized the opportunity to build SwellWomen: a Surf and Yoga Experience for women ages 18 and up.

With Me-Shell taking on the role as owner and director of SwellWomen and Dustin using her energy towards expanding the girl's camp, SwellWomen and Maui Surfer Girls forged a special sisterhood. Together, the two companies empower women of all ages and expose them to the sport of surfing on the island of Maui.
